Will Powerman do to Philippine Duathlon What Ironman Did to Triathlon?

In 2009, businessman Fred Uytengsu rolled the dice and brought the Ironman franchise to the Philippines with Cobra Ironman 70.3 as its inaugural race. From about 600 participants in 2009, it grew to 2,400 participants last year with many more triathletes wanting to race but the event sold out in a few hours. Any industry study would probably show that Ironman was the tipping point of Philippine triathlon. It gave the athletes a goal to shoot for, defined an annual race season and elevated the quality of races.

Will Powerman tread the same path? Duathlon’s run-bike-run format has always been regarded—unfairly it seems—as a prep sport for triathlon’s swim-bike-run. But many, including triathletes, concede that it is equally tough, if not tougher than triathlon. The number of duathlon races pale in comparison to the full race calendar of Philippine triathlon with events almost every month. To-date, the major duathlon races are Thumbie Remigio’s Philippine Duathlon Series, SBR’s Duaman and another one from Bike King.

This year, Remigio and Bataan International Triathlon organizers Raymund Magdaluyo and Tobias Bernardo synergize their strengths to bring Powerman to the Philippines. Powerman is the most prestigious duathlon brand in the world. It is owned and managed by the International Powerman Association (IPA) and draws the best duathletes from across the globe in both the professional and age group fields.
Powerman offers varying race distances: Classic distance composed of a 10km Run, 60km Bike and 10km Run; and a short distance, 5km Run, 30km Bike and 5km Run for beginners. As an additional challenge, they have also established the Powerman Ultra that boasts of a run-bike-run distance of 10km, 120km and 20km, respectively.

The best Powerman duathletes compete in the World Championships in Switzerland, in a one-of-a-kind collaboration between the IPA and the International Triathlon Union (ITU). The ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championships held in Zofingen, Switzerland features a unique 10km Run, 150km Bike, 30km Run course—a course befitting world-class duathletes.
The Powerman Duathlon Pilipinas will hold their inaugural race on November 15, 2015 in Balanga, Bataan. For registration details, go to http://powermanph.com/registration.html
